April 1964, Jack Goodman, owner of Clarence Dixon Cadillac in Hollywood California, ordered the only Cheetah to ever to be built and raced with a Heavy-Duty Corvette 427ci L88, aluminum head racing engine.
In June 2016, I recreated the original hand-lettering on the same Cheetah with a handful of original images given to me by Bob of BTM who was restoring the Cheetah. From those photos and doing a bit of my own research I was able to get the correct scale and lettering style to match the Cheetah as it raced with the number 33. Although the lettering might look a little better than it did as does the silver paint. This body has one of the smoothest laid silver metallic paint jobs I’ve seen and over fiberglass no less, cheers to Dave Rose.
This Saturday, January 21st 2017 the Cheetah is going to be auctioned at the famed Barrett Jackson in Scottsdale, Arizona. Could this one of a kind Cobra Killer bring seven figures? I can’t wait to see!

Axalta announce it’s “Paint Outside the Can” contest winners! Submissions were judged on creativity, execution and degree of difficulty.

GLEN MILLS, PA, October 16, 2015 – Axalta Coating Systems, a leading global manufacturer of liquid and powder coatings, is pleased to announce its 2015 Paint Outside the Can contest winners. The contest, which was open to professional auto body painters in Canada and the United States, was an invitation to unleash creativity using any Axalta-branded coating system to paint and decorate an unused, standard one-gallon paint can. Axalta organized the contest, which closed on September 15, 2015, as a focus on fun, creativity and to promote and support its auto body customers’ inner artists.

Industry celebrity judges selected six celebrity picks based on creativity, execution and degree of difficulty. There is a tie for sixth place, resulting in seven celebrity picks. In addition, six “fan favorites” were chosen by fans based on the number of photo “likes” that were posted on Axalta’s Instagram website. Finally, one “best-in-show” grand prize winner was selected from the seven celebrity picks. The winning submissions will travel on tour to custom car shows throughout the United States in 2016. Axalta will also display select submissions at its booth at the 2015 Specialty Equipment Market Association’s (SEMA) Show, as well as at other events. All submissions can be found online at Axalta’s website in addition to Axalta’s social media channels.

The winners are as follows:

Axalta’s celebrity judges were:

· Sam Bass, the first officially licensed artist of NASCAR®

· Ron Coan, reality TV star and one of the leading painters in the automotive industry known for show-stopping creations with Mobsteel at SEMA to groundbreaking OEM concept cars

· Danny “Danny D” Galvez, a well-known custom automotive painter and pinstriper

· Paul Quinn, a renowned airbrush and pinstriping artist and instructor in the custom paint industry

· Danny Taylor, a pinstripe master with a 39-year history in custom artistic automotive design

“It’s as much about thinking outside of the box as it is painting outside of the can,” said Quinn. “First and foremost, as a judge for this contest, I am looking at the quality of the artwork. Judging this was a whole lot harder than I expected it would be as the best entries were all of very high quality.”

To stripe or not to stripe….

There’s a time that comes when someone inevitably passes on the option of pinstriping. This is, in most cases, a mistake. It just looks better! It’s because it adds a level beyond being to simple and not simple-good, I’m talking amatuer simple. Pinstripes add a level of complexity that the job needs in order to look complete, finished and intentional. Now, deciding on the color of pinstriping is another decision and topic for another day.

Forty Years of Flat Out

SoCal of Arizona celebrates it’s 40th year in business!

20141212-005712.jpg
I know it’s a little late to post this but before the year is over I’d like to say thanks once again to SoCal of Arizona for being such a huge part of Hot Rodding. Frank, Mary and the whole crew at SoCal this one was for you!
It was a gift from the crew to be given to Frank and Mary for everything they do and for Fourty years in business. I’ve also got to give a big thank you to Norm and William of 10th Street Autobody for thinking of me when they needed to get this gift decorated. I’m very grateful and it was truly an honor!

“VIP meets Irezumi meets Custom Painting”

20141212-001746.jpg

The VIP style is very much alive in Arizona and it’s making an impression everywhere it goes. This latest customization efforts for Ceasar (@ceasarluna) of Kyoei USA was accomplished by painting the whole Lexus engine cover which is comprised of five separate pieces. This Lexus LS460 made a debut at SEMA 2013 adorned with some very subtle white on white Pinstriping executed by me and in this year he was starting to think of how to bring an updated and exciting version to SEMA 2014. Time passed and Ceasar came by the shop a couple times with different ideas but he eventually settled into wanting something more. I was on the same page and immediately something bold came to mind. An image of a Japanese samurai popped into my head and I jumped at the chance to presenting him with this vision. He was immediately on board.
The five pieces where dropped off and prepped for paint. De-texturization of some of the panels was needed, priming and painting them white by was executed by my friends and neighbors at Deluxe Customs. The engine pieces were now a very unique blank canvas. Time passed and the deadline loomed. I finally got things in order to push everything aside and focus my attention on hand-painting the image we had decided on, an ukiyo-e image of Fudo-Myo-o (not the samurai but I’m hoping to paint another engine setup and use that image). I mocked up how the panels would sit in the car and created a patern to follow a basic layout I had drawn. 30 hours later the artwork was complete. It was time to look over the details and hand it back to Deluxe for the final clear-coating. A satin finish.
Fudo Myo-o is a Buddhist diety of early Esoteric Buddhism. Fit for VIPs specific Japanese heritage. Blending Japanese history, religion, Irezumi traditions and custom cars!!! Whoa, who would have thought of this!

From Russia with Love

This was a fun project to work on considering I can’t read or write, to my knowledge, the Russian that I painted on it. Trusting the client to come up with the sayings and words to be painted on this Shark helmet was a must. I then had to research the spellings and convert the letters into a block style font that I could create by hand. Everything was done in a very traditional manner of laying out the design and painting by hand with lettering brushes except for the front and rear designs that utilize negative space. Those were done using a stencil technique.
